THE SEA OF OLTREPO' AND ITS MOLLUSCS

Once upon a time, our hills were islands of volcanic origin (as evidenced by the "stones read" of Mondondone) immersed in a warm sea populated by large shellfish. Six million years ago the sea withdraws and leaves the lagoons of brackish water.
The Oltrepò is so rich in fossils and there are places of discovery that are famous throughout the world for its abundance of material recovered. The church of Our Lady Montù stands on a rocky outcrop rich in fossil molluscs.
